Learning: As a National Board-Certified Art Teacher, I seek to understand accomplished teaching. I research, write, prepare instructional materials, and teach art curriculum that is appropriate to children with diverse cognitive, social, and educational backgrounds. I have developed innovative, interdisciplinary art curriculum that integrates art with social studies, language arts, mathematics, and science. As a life-long learner, I keep abreast of current issues on art and education through action research and professional development.
Program: Art is about visual communication. I seek to develop for my students a context for the art learning process through art history, critical thinking, and experience. I have developed a K-8 art program that seeks out resources from the community, including grants, museums, and guest speakers. Understanding that family support is essential, I institute annual parent- child art workshops at my school. I facilitate opportunities for my students to publicize their achievements.
Collaboration: As a public-school teacher, I am a member of a learning community whose members consist of administrators, clerical, teacher colleagues, parents, and approximately 1500 students. I collaborate with all of these people in implementing an effective and successful K-8 art education program. Additionally, I have extended my collaboration beyond the school to the museum education, university, and grant organization community. I have planned, organized and developed these relationships in order to support the art education program. Currently I have served as the Chairperson for the Special Area elective faculty for the past four years.
Advocacy: The visual arts is a way of experiencing and knowing about the world that is accessible to all students while being culturally marginalized in the educational community. I advocate for the inclusion of the visual arts as a form of social justice in education for students who prefer visual art or are challenged by other modalities of communication and learning.
